Planting, growing and harvesting is almost necessary to survive in RimWorld. Yes, you can survive by hunting animals all the time, but it’s not as effective as growing crops. However, let’s get to the point – what is the fastest growing crop in RimWorld? You need to know which crop is good to begin with and which is great in the long run.
Climate and soil
The most important aspects for perfect growth are climate and soil. In most areas on RimWorld the growing temperature lasts for a half year only. It means that you’ll have to face temperatures low enough for crops not to grow. So, if you’re just picking a location and want an efficient farm – look for warmer climates with all year temperatures high enough for crops to thrive.
Soil is also important. Bear in mind that jungles biomes usually have lots of mud, which doesn’t let you to create a growing zone. You also can find some small areas of rich soil, which increases growth rate up to 140%! It’s darker than regular soil.
Which is the fastest growing crop in RimWorld?
There are three main crops you should be aware of at the beginning of a game: corn, potato and rice. Each of these provides certain benefits. Here’s how much time it takes for these crops to full grow:
- Corn – 11.3 days until fully grown
- Rice – 3 days until fully grown
- Potato – 5.8 days until fully grown
As you can see, rice is definitely the fastest growing crop here. But it also gives you the least amount of food. So, it’s only good as a temporary solution.
Corn is your key to a long-term success
All these three crops provide very similar amounts of goods when we look at both growth time and produced amount. But let’s not forget the labour.
Let’s say you plant two fields – rice in one and corn in other. During full corn growth, you’ll be able to harvest rice almost three times. But if you would have corn in both fields, there would be 3x times less labour. That’s why the fastest growing crop in RimWorld isn’t necessarily the best one. Another thing… don’t forget to build a freezer before harvesting your crop, because they will spoil really quick after harvesting.
You may have heard about hydroponics basin in RimWorld. It let’s you grow crops indoors and fertility (growth rate) is 280%! It’s 2x quicker than rich soil and is very convenient as you don’t need to go outside and worry about varying temperatures. However…
The biggest downsides of hydroponics basin are power consumption and a need of constant power supply. If a solar flare hits you – all plants in side hydroponics basin will die almost immediately. Moreover, the power consumption is not big for basin itself – just 70W. But it needs a “Sun lamp”, which requires 2900W!
The fastest growing crop in RimWorld is definitely rice – plant it as soon as you start your colony and you’ll have some food in no time!
